So day 1 is actually day 2 because all of actual day 1 was filled with panicked packing up, a late departure, more traffic than expected, and a nighttime arrival at the campground. Having to learn how to back-in the teardrop at a campground for the first time at night (during quiet hours), was not a fun experience for either of us (and left us both very cranky), so we will say nothing more about the real day 1.

After a full night of sleep, all of us were far less stressed and ready to go adventuring in the park. It was already warm enough in May to require us to use the A/C in the trailer (especially for the pup to cool off), so it’s definitely hot when hiking around in the park. Make sure to take a sufficient supply of water if you plan to hike. As the park is known to be crowded at this time of year, we made use of the shuttle system to get around the park, rather than trying to find parking.

We spent most of the day adventuring to the various scenic views around the park, returning to the campground in the afternoon for a siesta and dinner. A while before sunset (which is very late this time of year) we headed out to the Canyon Overlook Trail which has adjacent parking and a nice view at sunset. Unfortunately, our first sunset was not particularly colorful, but still pretty views nonetheless.

Day 2 is onward to Bryce National Park!

Day 1 Campground:
Zion River Resort – Rating: ★★★★★

We very much enjoyed our stay at Zion River. They made late check-in easy with our information packet pinned to the outside board at the office. Overall the bathrooms were clean and the showers were FREE and HOT and very nice. The grill had good food and ice cream and the store was well equipped for anything you might have forgotten. We found the spaces decently roomy (isn’t everything in a teardrop?) and many sites had a decent amount of shade as well.
